Description
When Richard Strauss is mentioned, one might expect to hear symphonic poems or operas. Yet the German master composed a large number of magnificent lieder that are not well known in France, largely due to the language barrier. We invite you to listen to a completely unknown cycle with a narrator (in French), as well as lieder performed by Anne-Chantal Carrière (vocals), Annie Montcharmont (narrator) and the eminent pianist Yves-Bertrand Noack.
The ‘Enoch Arden’ cycle consists of two parts. Written in 1897 for narrator and piano, it is really the text (1864)—translated from Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem—that takes centre stage. Contrary to what one might think, the musical composition is extremely unadorned. This cycle was a huge success.
